When was the last time you had a date night?

Can you remember when your last date was?

When you are childless it is common practice to go out at least once a week on a date or social outing. Once you become a parent those nights out become less common, if they happen at all! And we can all understand how this happens, we get tired, we get busy with work, we don’t feel like it, it takes effort to get organised, is it worth it? I ask you though, what is the risk of NOT doing date night?

It was refreshing to hear that one mum had made a conscious decision once pregnant to maintain her once a week date with her husband. Even if it was fish and chips on the beach, or a picnic lunch, it was their one on one time.

This has been ongoing for this couple for many years, including the addition of other children since. It is extremely obvious that their relationship is definitely still on track and they are truly happy. It is easy to see their united parenting styles and respectful communications with each other. They appreciate what each does, and they support having time together and apart.

Does this sound like an unreachable ideal world from where you are in your life at the moment? I often read how people ‘drift’ apart, how people change, how partners don’t listen, how people want different things. That’s not what we signed up for, does it really have to be this way? I am sure if couples spent more time truly together then many of these situations may not arise. It needs to be a priority to give time to focus on your partner and be open and really listen to them, and have time to express your own thoughts and have them heard. To be heard, to have a united front, to be happy, will make for a better family all round.

This is not just about those in relationships. Those that are single parents needs to make time to socialise as well. It is proven that those that have a healthy social life benefit physically and mentally. It takes a conscious effort to lock in these times.
